Voices of the Street, a dramatized series of monologues taking place between October 11-13, 2019 at E's Garden Teahouse and Things in downtown Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas, U. S. Virgin Islands. Showings took place at 8pm on October 11 and 12 with the final showcase being a matinee at 5pm on Sunday.
Directed and hosted by Afreekan Southwell, the program included local performance artists including Jahweh David, Assata Afua, Khalarni Rivers, Nyaila Callwood, John Euwema and Shammie Phipps.
The featured theatrical performer, Iyaba Ibo Mandingo hails from the Caribbean and brilliantly intertwined poetry, prose, song and live painting to create an experience that both enlightened and entertained. Stories from his own life, created a clear mental picture of reminiscent, humorous and sometimes painful experiences had by many in the Caribbean and the continental United States. The 50 plus persons who attended left asking for more, suggesting that the performances be taken to the schools, other upcoming cultural events and that recordings be made available for the wider public.
